Evening dresses are dresses that are worn for formal occasions held during the evening hours such as balls, galas, and proms. Most evening dresses are full length and their hems just graze the floor. Because the skirts of evening dresses are usually long, the bodice and back of the dresses are where interest is added. Strapless gowns show off the shoulders while halter straps and keyhole openings add interest at the neckline. Open and plunging backs show some skin while the legs are covered up. Some evening dresses are also made in shorter lengths which hit around the knee. Evening dresses are made in fabrics such as chiffon and silk and some have overlays of lace or tulle and are embellished with rhinestones or jewels.
